It's a tower. Well, it's a piece of equipment. OK, it's sculpture. What is this thing?
Snow falls on the roof and is melted by electrical current; the water produced drips onto hanging metal pipes and freezes to ice in the cold. The wind blows, the tubes sway and hit, the ices crazes and drops into a resonant metal tub. An Ice Chime.
This elegant design combined timber posts, dimension lumber rafters, LVL stiffening elements, and cable bracing for lateral stability. We are still waiting for a winter cold and snowy enough to demonstrate proof of concept!
First erected on Boston's Greenway, it can now be found at Dartmouth College in NH.
